  • 2:00 pm Keynote #1 Fr. Michael Joncas: Hymns of Eucharistic Amazement

  • 3:00 pm Breakout #1 Choose from one of the following:

Sound Systems: An authority on sound systems, Robert Wisnieski will guide his listeners through the basic components of a sound system and will describe how these components interact with one another. He will also discuss today’s Bluetooth and Wi Fi connected system components. These newest devices can benefit your music ministry in multiple ways such muting microphones when not in use from your smartphone, mixing on the fly, and many other exciting, useful features! Rob will also discuss today’s speaker arrays and how sound maps can be created to best fill the worship space.

Music in African American Catholic Idioms: Local legend and Gospel composer Keir Ward will take his listeners on an audio tour of various songs of worship by African-American composers, past and present.

Bilingual Music - Best Practices, Resources and Pastoral Considerations: In this session, local musician and composer Santiago Fernández will talk about the effective use of bilingual music in the Liturgy. New bilingual music - useful and simple - will be presented and important pastoral considerations will be discussed. Also, the Quinceañera Mass will be explained and appropriate musical suggestions will be given!

Building a Viable Children's Choir Program: With the help of a demonstration choir, Susan Lindquist will guide her audience through rehearsal practices. Warm-up, sight-reading, and effective teaching techniques will be explored. The discussion that follows will include recruitment, repertoire, and programing. Susan continues to be in the trenches with us all, serving up a steady diet of stellar choral tutelage as head of the newly formed Cathedral Choir Academy of Detroit! If are considering starting a children’s choir or may be thinking of ways how to improve your current ensemble, don’t miss out on this presentation!

Addressing the Universal and Particular: In his talk on universal and particular types of music, long-time Detroit native Dr. Ronald Prowse will talk about the storied history of sacred music from the very roots of Christianity up through the present. Dr. Prowse will give helpful examples as to how you may balance the particular culture of your parish across space and time with universal transcendentals of Truth, Beauty and Goodness!
