Special commissions, "Mariupol," by Ukrainian choreographers Vladyslav Detiuchenko and "Fantasy of Touch" by Anastasiia Karchenko headline.
About this event
An evening of dances featuring the world premiere of two specially commissioned works by Ukrainian choreographers Vladyslav Detiuchenko and Anastasiia Karchenko and additional world premieres by Jamal Abrams and Robert J. Priore. Also featuring the DC premiere of the 2022 Liz Cherry Jones Memorial Commission Awardee, Tori Carter.
Vladyslav Detiuchenko's "Mariupol" is a tribute to the people of Ukraine and the city of Mariupol.
"One of the largest and most beautiful cities in Ukraine was the first to take the blow - Mariupol. Since March 1, civilians and heroes of this city are under blockade without light, food, and water. After the intense shelling of the aggressor, Mariupol almost disappeared, leaving only ruins. For every Ukrainian, Mariupol is a symbol of an indomitable spirit, absolute unity of the people, true human strength, the desire to be free, and a sincere desire to protect those we love no matter what. But it is also a symbol of the devastating effects of war, horrific crimes against humanity, senseless cruelty, genocide, and death.
Mariupol is a wound in the heart of every Ukrainian.
Any war is a wound in the heart of every person."
Company | E in Concert highlights the company's international work with the U.S. State Department, our partnership with Howard University, our at-home choreographers, and our partners in Ukraine who are fighting for their homeland. It is a true representation of what we do, where we've been, and where we're going.
All proceeds from Company | E in Concert will go toward commissioning another Ukrainian artist, giving them a platform to share their story and their art.
CONTINUE TO SUPPORT UKRAINE
If you would like to further support the people of Ukraine, please consider donating to the Come Back Alive foundation, an organization recommended to us by choreographer Vladyslav Detiuchenko. The website reads, "Since the beginning of the full-scale invasion in February 2022, we have multiplied our military assistance and supported the defenders of Ukraine, who have changed their everyday lives and joined the line of defense."
