Why does it cost for me to help to raise the barn? I'm providing your labor; shouldn't that be a benefit to you?

In order to execute the barn raising in a safe and accurate manner, using as many unskilled volunteers as possible, our timber framing specialist (Trillium Dell) has created a construction process that has been used at other barn raisings throughout the country. This method ensures that each individual will be outfitted with the training and safety equipment necessary to perform each task assigned. Our vendor charges us to put this OSHA-approved method together and provides teachers, training, and safety equipment to ensure that each person is safe while they are on the job. It would cost us far less to erect The Star Barn without community involvement, but we decided it would be worth the investment to get the community involved. The ticket price only covers a portion of our real cost. At other similar timber framing events around the country, participants are required to purchase a membership with the Timber Framers Guild at a cost of $136/year. That is not necessary at this event.

Are there any pre-qualifications to register for the Traditional Hand Barn Raising Workshop?

Pre-qualification for this workshop is required and is detailed below:

  • Must be able to lift approximately 50 pounds
  • Must be able to stand for 30 minutes or more
  • Must have no history of heart or heart-related conditions
  • Must have no existing neck or back injuries
  • Must have no limiting health issues
  • Participants are required to wear safety boots and work clothing

Training and supervision will be provided by Trillium Dell Timberworks. Eligible participants will use the traditional hand raising approach to re-erect The Star Barn. Primary tasks include: Pullers on the block and tackle, pushers with pike poles, lifters to lift the frame off the ground to head height, pounders to pound the pegs into the assembled frame and other timber frame specific building tasks. The goal is to raise all the bents, outside wall connectors, purlins, and rafter plates by the end of the festival.

Are there any pre-qualifications to register for the Peg Making Workshop?

Pre-qualification for this workshop is required and is detailed below:

Participants will make a blank from a stump with a Froe knife in a process called "riving". They will then shape the peg with a drawknife at a Shaving Horse Station and finally size and, point the peg at the Quality Control Station

How many tickets will be sold?

Due to the popularity of The Star Barn and limitations from our local township, our attendance is limited to the first 1,500 people for each day. Check back at www.starbarn.com to see available tickets.

Why should people come to The Star Barn Raising Festival?

The Star Barn Raising Festival will provide an opportunity for the public to be a part of an historic event. Attendees will be able to help raise the barn and participate in other barn building activities. There will also be many other activities, displays, and entertainment in which families and groups of all kinds can participate.

What will be the eventual impact on the community?

The Star Barn will be a premier venue location with facilities that allow organizations of all kinds to use the barn and its property to accommodate many different activities - from weddings to company parties, picnics, dinner theaters trade shows, etc. The Star Barn and its historic outbuildings, pond, gazebo, and fields will be a backdrop to the most memorable events.

Why is the moving of The Star Barn a big deal?

Due to advancing development and the close proximity to the highway, The Star Barn is now unable to be accessed and will continue to deteriorate with no plans for a future. Without the time, attention, and resources DAS is able to put into the barn and its restoration, it will simply be gone in a matter of years.

How will The Star Barn be affected by the move? Renovating/changing it?

The Star Barn is being meticulously disassembled, moved and restored back to its 1870's vintage. DAS is taking painstaking care to attempt to preserve the original look of the barn, right down to the stars on the barn and the weathervanes on the cupolas.

The 1877 Star Barn and its ancillary structures have been disassembled and moved from Middletown, Pennsylvania to Stone Gables Estate in Elizabethtown, Pennsylvania where they are being meticulously reconstructed and restored.

To commemorate the historic re-raising of The Star Barn, the "crown jewel" of the complex, you are invited to attend The Star Barn Raising Festival, which will be held July 2 -4, 2017 (Sunday through Tuesday), and watch the official re-raising of the timbers, walls, rafters, and center cupola of this Gothic Revival treasure.

This once-in-a-lifetime ticketed event has entertainment and activities for the whole family. Learn how a traditional hand barn raising is done or how a wooden peg is made through hands-on workshop experiences conducted by Trillium Dell Timberworks (prequalification and a fee is required). Enjoy a walking tour of the site and see The Star Barn's meticulously restored hog barn, chicken coop, and carriage house as well as many other structures and unique features. See the remarkably detailed 1:12-scale replicas of The Star Barn Complex. Learn about the history of The Star Barn, as portrayed by actors dressed in period clothing. Fireworks will be held on Tuesday, July 4.

Take a horse-drawn hitch wagon or pony ride. Pet a gentle alpaca, bounce on an inflatable house, or ride a mechanical bull. These experiences and much more are included in the price of admission. Free on- and offsite parking and shuttle service is available.

Hamburgers, barbeque chicken, French fries, ice cream, and a variety of other foods, as well as country crafts and Star Barn souvenirs will be available for sale at the event.

Bring your own camping chair or blanket, relax, and enjoy watching The Star Barn come to life. Proceeds from ticket sales will be utilized to offset the cost of the event and restoration of The Star Barn and its related structures.

The number of people that can be admitted to this event is limited and we would not want you to miss out on this opportunity to experience history. For more information about The Star Barn Complex, go to: thestarbarn.com.
