Description

Reminder! Space is limited. We recommend you register soon.

You will be among the first to hear the results of the EPA/Asakura Robinson assessment of the LRA directly from the consultants who prepared the report, which is scheduled to be issued the week of the event.

Join us on Friday, February 24 for Working Together: The St. Louis Vacancy Summit, sponsored by the St. Louis Association of Community Organizations (SLACO), in conjunction with the St.Louis Vacancy Task Force. At this day-long working meeting, you'll join others who have been working toward solutions to this major challenge. In addition to presentations outlined below, we'll have small-group discussions and opportunities to plan concrete next steps.

We plan to discuss:

True Cost of Vacancy: From lost property value to higher insurance costs, vacant buildings cause a ripple effect that impacts the entire city. Jonah Klein-Barton, an economics student at Washington University, will discuss his study of the true cost of vacancy and the St. Louis Fire Department will make a presentation on the danger vacant buildings pose to firefighters.

Center for Community Progress report: In 2015 the city of St. Louis was awarded a Technical Assistance scholarship from the Center for Community Progress, a highly respected national organization. St. Louis City Planner Don Roe will discuss this comprehensive report on vacancy and blight and its implications.

Assessment of St. Louis Land Reutilization Authority (LRA)

You will be among the first to hear the results directly from the consultants who prepared the report, which is scheduled to be issued the week of the event.

As a component of the recently completed Strong Cities, Strong Communities initiative, the U. S. Environmental Protection Agency was asked by St. Louis city officials to conduct a third party assessment of the St. Louis Land Bank. EPA commissioned the Austin-based urban planning and design firm Asakura Robinson to conduct this assessment. David Doyle from EPA and Alexandra Miller from Asakura Robinson will discuss the recently completed assessment

Aligning existing vacancy efforts and next steps for moving forward Many dedicated individuals, organizations and city officials have worked to address vacancy. The summit is an opportunity to bring stakeholders together to discuss existing efforts and how we can use the information from these studies and reports to move forward in a unified way to address vacancy and blight in our city.

The sessions run consecutively, so you will have the opportunity to attend them all.

The event will be held at T-Rex, a co-working space dedicated to technology, innovation, and solutions. The cost is $10 and a light breakfast and lunch is included. Parking is available in the S & H lot at 1000 Lucas Ave. for $5. Parking options around T-REX

SEATING IS LIMITED. WE RECOMMEND REGISTERING AS SOON AS POSSIBLE.

Due to space limitations, this gathering is not open to the general public. If you know someone you think should attend, please email their name and contact information to vacancy@slaco-mo.org
