Event description

Description

The Square One Project and Merritt College invite you to join us for the keynote reception of the Roundtable on the Future of Justice Policy. Join us to connect over food and drinks, and listen in on an on-stage conversation between our featured speaker Alicia Garza - esteemed Oakland-based advocate, freedom dreamer, and Black Lives Matter co-founder - and Marlon Peterson of the Decarcerated Podcast. They will offer reflections on criminalization and punitive excess in the context of the justice system, discuss Alicia's work in these areas, and share their ideas and visions for moving forward.

This event is an all ages event that is free and open to the public. The livestreamed portion of the keynote reception will begin at 7:30 pm (Pacific) via The Square One Project's Youtube page.

The Roundtable on the Future of Justice Policy is a key component of the Columbia University Justice Lab's Square One Project. Square One is focused on conducting a foundational reevaluation of justice policy in this country – moving toward expanding opportunity, improving public safety in local communities, and reducing reliance on punishment as a response to social problems that are so often rooted in poverty, violence, and racial discrimination.

During the Roundtable, an invited group of participants - academics, advocates, community leaders, and practitioners - will participate in a public, facilitated discussion. As an in-person or livestream observer, you can provide input, ask questions, and respond to the discussions as they occur, thanks to the technology available through our partners at the North Carolina Central University Law School’s Virtual Justice Project.

Click here to register as an observer for the Oakland Roundtable on “Examining Criminalization, Punitive Excess, and the Courts: Implications for Justice Policy and Practice," taking place at Merritt College's Newton-Seale Conference Room on March 28 to 30, 2019.
