Event description

Description

Until you know how to understand your heroes and villains, you can't really understand your story...

Whether you're a writer, a filmmaker, an actor, or any other type of storyteller, every story you create is ultimately about your heroes and villains, your protagonists and antagonists. How those characters think determines their motivations, their actions, and their choices. This workshop will teach you how to understand the minds of those characters, enabling you to create full and deeply rich heroes and villains that will take your stories to the next level!

Who should attend: Writers, directors, producers, writers, producers, directors, and story readers.

Requirements: Pen and paper, or notetaking tools

By the end of this class you'll be able to:

  • As a writer, construct more compelling, complex and believable characters that connect with your audience.
  • As an actor, refine your ability to portray more convincing characters.
  • And as a spectator, more deeply comprehend and appreciate the power of characters in stories.

Instructor: Brian S. Chan has done a number of other workshops for The Greenhouse's Spotlight Workshops, including Cultivate Your Creativity and Understanding the Minds of Heroes & Villains in Story. He is a professor at Biola University, teaching on a philosophy of beauty, has a doctorate in philosophy, has been a judge for the 168 Film Festival for the past three years, and is the author of the book, The Purple Curtain, as well as his first novel, Not Easily Broken, which was published in 2015 by Curious Books. He also has been an exhibiting visual artist for several years in Manhattan, the San Francisco Bay Area, Sacramento, Chicago, Dallas, and Los Angeles, and he runs a Wing Chun Kung Fu studio in Hollywood.

Space is limited, and you must register ahead of time, so sign up today!

FAQs

Are there ID requirements to enter the event?

The good folks at the CBS Security Gate will need to see a government-issued photo ID to match with your name on the list we give them, so make sure you register here and bring your driver's license or passport with you.

What are my parking options getting to the event?

The security personnel will instruct you on where to park when you arrive. This will be based on what other things are happening on the lot that day, so make sure you arrive early enough to walk from where they have you park to MPR-6, the room we will be in that morning. You can ask the security personnel for a map of the lot when you arrive so you can find the building easily. Please do not park on the streets in the neighborhood around the studio lot.
