The Spirit of Jan Karski Award is granted annually by the Jan Karski Educational Foundation, whose mission is to instill in people - especially youth - the values of leadership, courage and integrity, as exemplified by the life of Jan Karski, a Polish Catholic and emissary of the Polish Underground, who risked his life to bring his eyewitness report about the Holocaust to the attention of Western leaders. His lifetime of service to humanity as an emissary, a distinguished educator at Georgetown University and as a voice of conscience, is an ongoing inspiration. Once called “One Man Who Tried to Stop the Holocaust,” Karski was recognized posthumously by President Barack Obama with the Presidential Medal of Freedom, thanks to the Foundation’s Centennial Campaign.
The award is given to distinguished individuals who have demonstrated the principles represented by Jan Karski through their actions. The past recipients include: John McCain, US Senator; Samantha Power, the US Ambassador to the United Nations; and Ewa Junczyk-Ziomecka, Consul General of the Republic of Poland in New York.
The program is organized by the Jan Karski Educational Foundation in collaboration with The New School for Social Research.
