The SPECIFICS of POETRY Writing with TIM SEIBLES
Sunday, July 31, 2016
1 PM - 4:30 PM
The Writer's Garret Classroom
10809 Garland Road
In this workshop we will focus on the importance of specificity in writing—honing the sounds and penetrating tone, the refinement and selection of the particulars, the images, the exacting, figurative gestures that provide the fuel for gripping poetry. Participants will bring one poem very near to completion and another closer to a first draft than to publication. These will familiarlize us with your work at varying stages of development, and enable us to challenge your poetic assumptions. We will use short in-class writing exercises to help each of us break out of well-worn writing routines and strategies, and then we'll look for ways to take our poems in more specific directions, some in direct contrast to the range of pieces you have presented. Such work will allow us to add fresh color and nuanced shades to our writerly palettes.
Please note: This hands-on workshop is limited to 16 participants.
Recently named Poet Laureate of Virginia, TIM SEIBLES is the author of several collections of poetry, including Body Moves (1988), Hurdy-Gurdy (1992), Hammerlock (1999), Buffalo Head Solos (2004), and Fast Animal (2012), which won the Theodore Roethke Memorial Poetry Prize and was nominated for a 2012 National Book Award. Seibles’ honors include fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Provincetown Fine Arts Work Center, as well as an Open Voice Award from the National Writers Voice Project. In 2013 he received the PEN Oakland Josephine Miles Award for poetry.
