About the Artists:

MESHI CHAVEZ focuses on the distillation of movement by a deep commitment to the investigation of what is essential.

This way of working requires a quieting of the thinking mind, providing greater access to creative intuition. His choreography encourages dancers to step away from preconceived ideas of movement in order to facilitate pure action. This process allows dance to arrive out of what is unknown, creating movement that both peaks curiosity and ushers in a sense of freedom.

Meshi Chavez has been a choreographer and movement teacher for nearly 20 years. He has taught and performed across the United States & Europe. His students range from professional dancers to people who don’t perform, but who dance as a way to enhance the quality of their lives. He began his teaching career in Soul Motion TM, and then got seduced into the pursuit of Butoh. He is a student of Natsu Nakajima (the first female to dance this form) and Denise Fujiwara. He also spent the first part of his training with Akira Kasai. He has presented workshops at Schumacher College with renowned author and theologian Matthew Fox and is co-founder of Momentum Conscious Movement in Portland OR, USA.

LISA DEGRACE

Lisa DeGrace creates and performs music for dancers, video, and installation. She describes her work as "environmental soundcapes,” developed from layers of vocal manipulation, sound clips, and live & recorded instrumentation. Her scores offer grounding for narrative, movement, and mood. Lisa has a degree in composition from Hampshire College. She comments, “My work lives in the cells, in the spirit, in the gut, in the listening, the unknown, the space in between… in the muck of transformation. I enjoy harmonies that press uncomfortably up against each other, and voices that envelope.”

ANASTAZIA LOUISE ARANAGA, founder and artistic director of Bad Unkl Sista, brings her personally developed style of Stillpoint movement, physical theatre and comedy combined from a lifetime of performance experience and distilled from a vast array of teachers and collaborators. She began her serious performance path in 1990 and founded Bad Unkl Sista in 2002.

Anastazia has since produced hundreds of performances for local, regional and international promoters, galleries and festivals. Her Stillpoint movement approach emphasizes creative and proactive human development within our present-day social context.

Anastazia continues to evolve her characteristically unique fusion of performance and costuming, foregrounding the pathways of transcribing and uniting outer and inner landscapes into a physical expression to reach witnesses on a personal level.

MIN YOON is dedicated to studying movement in stillness and collective consciousness with Anastazia Louise Aranaga as a part of Bad Unkl Sista. Min started butoh dance out of the darkest moments in her life, to dive into deeper landscapes and research the images, opening, and movement we need for our times. Min’s artworks focus on sharing a sense of connection and presence across socio-political divides. Her works have ranged across immersive experiences, poetry, stories, social games, and ritual design.
