This 3-day intensive seminar with Australian microbiologist and climate scientist Walter Jehne will bring our group together in a deep exploration and discussion of how we can meet many of our most important goals with soil biology--by restoring the living, intelligent, water-holding, cooling, soil carbon sponge that used to cover most of the land around us. Walter Jehne--founder of Healthy Soils Australia, and one of the early researchers on glomalin, myccorhizal fungi, and root ecology-- will be the main presenter each day.
Didi Pershouse--author of The Ecology of Care-- will facilitate leadership development circles to help us move this work forward together as a group. We also have several guest presenters in the works. We hope that most people can join us for all three days in order to build a community of current and future leaders who understand the research and policy work that Walter has been engaged with since the 1960s. However, you are welcome to join us for a single day if that works best for you. Each day will focus on a particular aspect of the soil carbon sponge:
Wednesday: The role of the soil carbon sponge in local and global cooling, hydrology, and climate resilience via the water cycle.
Thursday: The formation and restoration of the soil carbon sponge and its role in the carbon cycle: root ecology, mycorrhizal fungi, and glomalin as carbon storage.
Friday: The relationship between the soil carbon sponge, human nutrition, and human health. Mycorrhizal fungi as an intelligent filter that searches for nutrients while keeping toxins out of the food supply.
Daily THINK TANK and Leadership Development Circles: Each day will include time for us to think together about how to support each other as leaders while we bring the essential work of soil restoration into our farms, communities, organizations, schools, and governments.
Price and Payment: We are keeping the cost as low as possible, while also providing a space where we can really work together in a focused way--and prices include breakfast and lunch each day. Prices for the full seminar are $325 regular rate, and $135 low income rate. Prices for a single day are $120 regular rate and $50 low income. (Feel free to pay in between the two numbers by tacking on an additional donation) If enough people pay the regular rate, or if we get some angels to donate above and beyond the regular rate, we may have a few spots open for full scholarships. Please contact Didi at firstname.lastname@example.org if you would like to be considered for a scholarship.
Registration: We are limiting the number of participants to facilitate discussion, and expect this to fill up quickly. Please register early, especially if you plan to pay by check. You are not registered until we have received payment.
Meals: Breakfast and lunch are included in the cost. There are a variety of restaurants in the area for dinner.
Accomodations: Our conference room will look directly over beautiful Lake Morey. On site lodging at the Lake Morey Resort are available for our group at a cost of approximately $109 per night, for a double or a single room. (ie you can split that cost with a roommate.)
