THE SMOKEY STEVENS--CAPITAL CITY READERS THEATRE--PRESENTS ''DANCING ON THE AIR'' --THE TEENARAMA STORY' ON JUNE 24TH, 2019 AT BUSBOYS / ANACOSTIA. "DANCING ON THE AIR"--THE TEENARAMA STORY IS AN INSPIRING 1960'S MUSICAL THAT CAPTURES THE EXCITEMENT AND STRUGGLES OF ONE OF THE NATION'S FIRST BLACK TEEN DANCE SHOWS," THE TEENARAMA DANCE PARTY". WHEN WASH. D.C.'S OWN WOOK--T.V. LAUNCHED THIS GROUND BREAKING SHOW IN 1963, AFRICAN AMERICAN TEENS WHO HAD PREVIOUSLY BEEN RESTRICTED FROM APPEARING ON SHOWS WOULD HAVE A SHOW OF THEIR OWN FOR THE FIRST TIME. THIS SHOW ALSO CREATED A UNIQUE STAGE FOR BLACK MUSIC LEGENDS. WOOKS PIONEERING RADIO EXCUTIVES AND A SPIRITED GROUP OF DANCING TEENS CAME TOGETHER AND MADE BROADCASTING HISTORY WHILE TAKING ON THE CHALLENGES OF RACIAL SEGREGATION, TEENAGE PEER PREASURE, THE DRAFT AND FORBIDDEN LOVE.. FILLED WITH ORIGINAL MUSIC OF THE PERIOD, AUTHENTIC "HAND DANCE" STYLES, AND A TREMENDOUS AMOUNT OF D.C.
