Description

Learn the skills of smoke photography to add drama and atmosphere to your work.

December is a magical month. As the nights draw in and the leaves fall from the trees, everything from deserted nighttime streets to still and misty woodlands take on a new and almost fairytale aspect. It’s also great time of the year for outdoor photography and anyone who braves the colder weather is sure to come away with some rewarding shots. But by adding a bit of smoke to your photography you can take things to a whole lot further! This is your opportunity to find out how.

For more than 10 years I have been adding drama to my photography through the use of of smoke. Smoke can add so many extra dimensions, from subtle visual effects all the way through to the creation of an all-out fantasy. I have worked with a wide variety of smoke machines as a part of both my creative and commercial shoots, as well as on the sets of music videos for well known musicians. As Joe McNally said to me once, “using smoke on a photoshoot is like herding cats!” He might have a point there. But there is a certain science to the craziness, and mastering the skills are well worth the effort.

The day will be based around two shoots - one outdoor, with a model in a atmospheric woodland location, and the other indoor, to get to grips with the kit in a controlled environment. For the outdoor elements be sure to wrap up warm. There will also be plenty of warm refreshments throughout the day with mulled wine and mince pies to finish to ensure everyone stays toasty!

This event is perfect for both amateurs and professionals who want to use smoke in their photography. It is also a great event for anyone who is interested in photography and just wants to enjoy a great day out with fellow enthusiasts. During the workshop you will be working with location lighting, electronic flash and available light. You’ll be able to get hands on with a high performance mains powered unit and also a location based system. The only photography kit you’ll require on the day is a DSLR with lens (around 70-200mm will be best, though you can get some great results with a wider angle lens too). Access to an up-to-date version of Photoshop is also recommended for any post production work you may like to do on the shots you take away from the event (advice will be provided).

During the day we will cover.

1. When to use smoke? You can use smoke in a very wide variety of situations but I will be sharing how appropriate use and context are important.

2. The difference between Smoke and Haze.

3. How to use smoke to create different effects and drama.

4. The pitfalls to avoid.

5. How to combine the best elements of different exposures in post production.

6. Choosing the right smoke machine for you. And when to hire, buy or improvise.

8. How to Haze. This great technique, which is barely perceptible, is used all the time in movies and other big productions - often without you being aware!

7. Getting your model to work with the smoke.

At the end of the day you’ll get to walk away with some photography you’ll be proud of to add to your portfolio, some great moments to share and remember, plus hopefully a network of new contacts who’ll not only share your enthusiasm for photography but also happy memories of a great day out.
