Event description

Description

Do not need to print out paper tickets we do electronic check-in by name at the door.

The Sky Tonight is a live show presented by astronomers from OSU. It is a 30-40 minute planetarium presentation, followed by 15 minutes of Q&A with an expert astronomer. The Sky Tonight covers basic naked-eye astronomy from the Earth. We cover many topics, including the annual motions of the planets and the Sun, the daily motion of the Sun and the stars, the orientation of the sky, locations of important points and well-known constellations, the Seasons, the appearance of the sky from different locations on the Earth, light pollution in urban areas, and current astronomical events in the night sky.

The Sky Tonight is presented at a level appropriate for a general audience. Children are welcome, and the material itself is appropriate for all ages, but some of the material will likely go over the heads of younger audiences-- Much like many films, young children will likely enjoy the show, but probably won't understand all of it. The planetarium shows are not recommended for children ages 3 or 4 and under unless they are comfortable in the dark and can sit quietly for 30-40 minute

Presenting an "arts and astronomy" planetarium show this Saturday at 7pm, for those interested. Featured in this show will be the science behind astronomy references in famous artwork, including works by Shakespeare, van Gogh, and Holst -- even with reference of the musical theories of astronomy's own Herschel and Kepler.

Planetarium Information

The OSU Planetarium is located on the 5th floor of Smith Laboratory at 174 W 18th Ave, on the OSU Main Campus in Columbus, Ohio. Access from the NE corner of Smith Lab on 19th Ave.

Map to Smith Laboratory

Enter through our main entrance at the northeast entrance of Smith Lab, follow signs to the northeast elevator (or the stairs) and take it up to the 5th floor. Note: It does matter that you go to the elevator at the north end of the building. The other building doors will likely be locked if it is not during normal university hours, and the other stairwells and elevators in the building do not go all the way up to the 5th floor, so you must work your way to the northeast corner to get to the planetarium. Please plan on arriving at least 5-10 minutes before the planetarium shows, since the doors will typically remain closed once the show begins.

Parking

Unfortunately, there is no parking available at Smith Lab itself. Public parking garages are located nearby on the OSU campus, with parking available off High Street, for a small fee. We recommend the Tuttle Garage or Ohio Union South Garage which are open to visitors during the day. Arps Garage is available after 4pm. Please note that construction still significantly impacts access to various garages, so please allow additional time to reach the planetarium.

Parking fees for campus garages are $3.75 for one hour and $6.25 for 2 hours. Please see OSU CampusParc for details.
