Lecture and Q&A with Dr. Brendan Kelly, Arctic Climate Researcher

What is up with our climate? Arctic ice is melting fast with global impacts on sea level, weather, and agriculture. What is happening now and what can we do to protect ourselves and future generations? What can we expect locally and globally in the coming decades? Dr. Brendan P. Kelly, arctic climate researcher will discuss past and present drivers of the earth’s changing climate.

About the Speakers

Dr. Brendan P. Kelly is a Senior Fellow at the Center for the Blue Economy (CBE), Middlebury Institute of International Studies (MIIS), and Executive Director of the Study of Environmental Arctic Change (SEARCH), a U.S. program with a mission to study Arctic change through collaboration with the research community, funding agencies, and other stakeholders.

Dr. Kelly is a marine ecologist with a focus on sea ice environments. He has participated in and led collaborative research in the North Pacific Ocean, the Arctic Ocean, the Sea of Okhotsk, the Baltic Sea, and Antarctica. His career in Arctic research and policy spans four decades and includes serving on the faculty and administration of the University of Alaska, as a research scientist with NOAA’s National Marine Mammal Laboratory, Deputy Director of Arctic Sciences at the National Science Foundation, Chief Scientist of the Monterey Bay Aquarium, and Assistant Director for Polar Science in the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy. Currently, he serves on the National Academy of Sciences’ Polar Research Board and as a Senior Fellow at the Center for the Blue Economy, Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey.

Tom Erb will join our event electronically via Zoom after Dr. Kelly's talk.

Tom is the National Field Organizer for Our Climate and the Project Manager at the Community Home Energy Retrofit Project. He is a Senior at Pomona College and studies Public Policy Analysis and Politics. Prior to joining these groups, Erb was the Congressional Liaison for the #4Billion4Us campaign, a communications intern for United States Congressman Eric Swalwell, a climate intern for United States Senator Brian Schatz, and the Co-President of a carbon pricing campaign at the Claremont Colleges. This summer he was also a field intern for Congressman Scott Peters. He has spoken on behalf of climate activism in the National Geographic Documentary Series Years of Living Dangerously, at the 2016 Democratic National Convention, and at the World Bank Digital Media Zone. In April of 2017, he was the Youth Spokesman at the World Bank's Carbon Pricing Leadership Coalition's High Level Assembly. He is originally from Poway, CA.

Lecture Location & Details

The Irvine Auditorium is part of the McCone Building, located at 499 Pierce Street, Monterey, CA, 93940, on the campus of the Middlebury Institute of International Studies. Attendees will enter through the glass doors from Pierce street, and the auditorium is located just inside to the left.

Check in Begins: 5:15pm

Doors Open: 5:30pm

Event: 6:00pm to 7:30pm


Parking is available in any Middlebury Inst. campus lot after 5pm or on the street (time limits on surrounding streets end at 6pm).
