The Silent Me 1st Annual Mental Health Awareness Walk
Sat, May 13, 2017, 9:30 AM – 2:30 PM EDT
Last year, I was diagnosed with Bipolar I Disorder with depression and anxiety. Since my diagnosis, I have been dedicated to raising awareness to mental health. I blog and I go numerous places telling my story, in hopes of making a difference. In May 2016, I founded my organization 'The Silent Me'. I want to make a difference! I want to help people of all ages, ethnicites, backgrounds who may be struggling with a mental illness, or may know someone such as a friend or family member who is. The mission statement of 'The Silent Me' is:
"Our goal is to raise awareness and erase the stigma of mental illnesses in our daily, our churches, our communities and our families."
How can I raise awareness everywhere but my hometown? That is the question I asked myself numerous times in the last months. Marion County has one of the highest unemployment rates in the state of South Carolina. Many people, adults and children, are not exposed to the resources of Mental Health. Providing information and resources at the walk will benefit so many people in this area.
We will have Mental Health professional from this region and state to provide information for attendees. We will also provide fun activites such as a free workout session before the event!
Growing up in Marion, South Carolina, I always knew it was a special place! The small town feel was something no one could ever overlook. I knew everybody who went to high school with me, my parents couldn't go to the grocery without talking to someone they knew for 10 mins. I look forward to giving back to the community that gave me so much.
Registration includes lunch and dinner. Water bottles will be provided by 'The Silent Me'.
Concluding the walk, a Marion High School senior will be awarded "The Andrew and Dr. Mary G. Eaddy Memorial Scholarship", in memory of my maternal grandparents.
