About this event

Gig economy workers, who provide critical services like delivery, home care, and cleaning, are now frontline workers in our fight against the COVID-19 pandemic. And yet these essential workers are some of the least protected workers in the country.

The gaps in our social safety net have exacerbated issues of health equity as some workers have been able to stay home while others have not, with both Latinos and African Americans now experiencing disproportionately high infection rates. Women of color are especially vulnerable, as they make up more than half of food delivery workers, and the vast majority of in-home workers in industries like home health care and cleaning.

At a time when uncertainty is the norm, how do we ensure a system of accountability that supports the health, safety, and economic stability of this rapidly growing worker population?

The good news? There's a growing collaborative across state and local government, community legal organizations, grassroots organizers, and philanthropy who are increasing their efforts to protect workers' rights. During this conversation, we will share:

  • quantitative and qualitative data about app-based frontline workers’ experiences during the pandemic
  • provide updates about the ongoing enforcement efforts
  • invite attendees to consider how we can ensure investments in workers rights’ advocacy are seeing a return in the safety and well being of all workers

We're excited to be joined by:

• Vanessa Bain | Founder, Gig Workers Collective

• Veena Dubal | Professor of Law, University of California, Hastings

• Mara W. Elliot | City Attorney of San Diego

• Jenny Montoya Tansey | Policy Director, Public Rights Project
