DESCRIPTION:

The Idaho State Department of Education, Early Childhood Special Education is offering you the opportunity to participate in a Visual Phonics Workshop and virtual classroom series.

The development of phonological awareness and phonetic skills is part of the Idaho Core State Standards. These skill areas have been very challenging to address with many of our students who have language delays, English Language Learners, individuals with speech or auditory discrimination problems or who are deaf or hard of hearing because these skills are traditionally taught by using auditory input.

The See-the-Sound Visual Phonics system was introduced in 1982 by the International Communication Learning Institute (ICLI), http://www.icli.org to address this challenge. See-the-Sound Visual Phonics provides an option for teaching these skills and not require the use of any auditory input. Visual Phonics is a multi-sensory approach which uses tactile, kinestetic, visual and auditory feedback in conjunction with 52 hand cues and written symbols.

This workshop is based on the collective research works of the ICLI, deaf educators, speech language pathologist, general educators and personal experiences of the presenters who are certified Visual Phonics Trainers. Through the use of brief lectures, interactive games, video clips and audience participation, the participants will learn the foundations on which Visual Phonics is based; produce the 52 hand cues and written symbols and see techniques for integrating Visual Phonics into classroom activities.

Attendees will also participate in six (6) one-hour implementation virtual meetings November-May to support the implementation of skills learned during the training. One university credit will be offered to individuals that attend the training and all six implementation meetings.

Participants of this workshop will be expected to complete the live workshop to learn about visual phonics; the philosophy it was built on, followed by interactive hands-on practice to learn the Visual Phonics system that you can take back to your classroom to implement immediately.

Following the live workshop, participants will participate in one-hour monthly virtual classrooms to continue to build your skill set and access continued support as you implement this strategy in your classroom with fidelity. The virtual classes will start in November and continue through May, 3:30-4:30 p.m. PT and 4:30-5:30 p.m. MT.
