Synopsis

On his uncle’s estate in the Russian countryside, young writer Konstantin is preparing the performance of his first self-written play, hoping to finally impress his mother Irina, an ageing actress. Yet drama already begins to unfold as the audience arrives at the little stage by the lake: Irina has brought her lover Trigorin, a famous writer, who is admired and envied by Konstantin. Nina however, Konstantin’s girlfriend and star of his play, rapidly falls under Trigorin’s spell. Meanwhile, poor teacher Medvedenko is trying to woo Masha, the estate manager’s daughter, who in turn is pining for Konstantin. Sure enough, the premiere of his play is a complete disaster and in the aftermath, Konstantin and his guests struggle with artistic failure and unrequited love, while trying to accept or escape their petty, unsatisfying lives.

Is The Seagull a heartbreaking tale about unhappy people and their shattered dreams? Or is it a hilarious satire? Anton Chekhov, the master of psychological realism, challenges his audience to question the very nature of his play. In our Entity winter production, we are exploring Chekhov's serious and satirical intentions, and the lives of his multi-layered deeply-conflicted characters, in a modernized timeless setting.
