Description

In 1931, nine African American teenagers were falsely accused of assaulting two white women on a train in Tennessee — a crime that never happened. After rushed trials and poor representation, eight of the nine “Scottsboro Boys” were sentenced to death. While considered a tragic miscarriage of justice, wrongful convictions continue to afflict underrepresented communities every day.

Phoenix Theatre and The Black Theatre Troupe will bring this powerful story to the stage in April 2017 with the Tony nominated production, “The Scottsboro Boys." Join the Center for the Study of Race & Democracy for a dynamic community dialogue exploring this landmark case and how the musical theatre production uses challenging and creative storytelling to bring awareness to issues that still impact American society today.
