Neuroscience and Well-Being: How Spirituality Affects Our Health and DNA

Jon Kabat-Zinn, the father of western mindfulness, defines Mindfulness as “paying attention in a particular way: on purpose, in the present moment, and nonjudgmentally." Mindfulness is about living in the here and now, not rehashing the past or worrying about the future, being awake to all that life offers us. This attentiveness and awareness prevents the distraction and numbness that so many people feel every day, a result of too many duties and obligations to fulfill. By practicing mindfulness, we are able to be here, now, attending to that which is right in front of us. We then experience the joys life offers us, leading to better physical and mental health, better relationships, and increased happiness. Our workshop will explore several simple ways to increase mindfulness throughout the day.

Spirituality and Neuroscience of Self-Compassion

This presentation will draw upon recent findings in neuroscience and psychology, illuminating self-care and spiritual practices that nurture gentleness, kindness and patience towards ourselves. These practices help soften the tendency to be self-critical when we make mistakes or notice our imperfections. Far from being self-centered or selfish, these actions generate deeper understanding of others, enhancing our relationships and our ability to care for each other. Helpful tips on how to practice Self-Compassion (both for ourselves and others) will be included in this multimedia presentation. As a bonus, exercising self-compassion aids in reducing stress and inflammation while slowing aging in our cells and our brains.

In addition, leaders from the Mindfulness Institute and other self-care groups will be on hand to teach and help us experience practices that calm, care for and encourage self-compassion.
