Event description

Description

What are the basics of making great cocktails? How can science improve your bartending? What are secrets to making an irresistible drink? Doctor Inkwell has developed a program to cover all these topics in a 3-part event, each with a quick talk, demonstration and hands-on lab that's limited to 12 participants.

Introduction

Do you want your bar talk neat, up, or on the rocks? In a brief intro, we'll cover the basics: what's what, who's who, and all the terminology of the bar, while guests enjoy a welcome drink.

Part 1: Ice’s Nice, Baby

Everyone knows ice is important to making good drinks. But why? Doctor Inkwell will give a quick talk about why ice works best with ethanol, why we drink alcohol when it’s cold, when to complain about that cocktail the bartender poured and has been sitting in ice for a few minutes before serving, and finally stirring, shaking, and why they’re used differently. Plus, an overview of cocktail shakers and why some are better than others.

HANDS-ON: Each participant will get a chance to learn how to stir with a proper bar spoon, and shake a drink in a cocktail shaker. Guests will end up with a tasting portion of each style of cocktail.

Part 2: The Five Flavors

Doctor Inkwell will talk about the science of taste and how sweet, bitter, sour, salty and umami have roles in the cocktail experience. Flavors interact in an unexpected way on the palate, and this becomes especially important in the precision of cocktail proportions. With a focus on sweet, sour and bitter, guests will learn how to choose ingredients, make adjustments and chart a path towards creating a great drink.

HANDS-ON: Now that guests have learned to shake, each group will create balanced and unbalanced drinks, then try a few tools to correct their course.

Part 3: Finishing: Aroma & The Science of Desire

When approaching any food, what determines its deliciousness? Guests will learn how smell and flavor balance a cocktail, and what different finishes do for a drink, from citrus twists, to cut wheels, smoke, herbs, oils and bitters. This is the last step is arming guests with the basic tools in being able to create on their own cocktails, armed with the knowledge, tools and know-how of a Boozephreak (the pH is for the science).

HANDS-ON: Now that guests have learned to stir, each group will make cocktails and try different finishes to see how it affects the cocktail experience.

Outroduction

After clsoing remarks, each guest will get a chance to bring home some bar swag while they mingle, ask questions and compare notes.
