The School in the Cloud film-screening (British Science Week)
Date and time
Description
The School in the Cloud will raise awareness and stimulate debate into new online methods of learning and teaching. The result is a film that is accessible to the general public with far-reaching implications for creating a global society.
This ‘self-directed’ approach to education is of particular importance in rural and remote areas of low economic activity because ‘the best teachers and schools don't exist where they're needed most’ says Prof Mitra. Arguing that ‘the information revolution has enabled a style of learning that wasn’t possible before’ (Wired Magazine)
Professor Sugata Mitra has conducted many experiments since 1999 that have revealed groups of students can learn almost anything by themselves given internet access and the ability to work as a community. The film follows Prof. Mitra of Newcastle University as he attempts to scale-up his research in the UK & India with a $1m award by the Internet ideas organisation TED (2013).
Prof Mitras research is presented in an accessible manner by asking the audience to reflect on a really BIG question ‘What is the Future of Learning?’. Award winning British film-director Jerry Rothwell took four years to make the film. Allowing us to see the world though the eyes of ‘participants’ as well as giving us insight into the ideas and objections behind-the-scenes that are driving the scientific process.
This screening is presented by Dorset Cloud School the after-school club that boost learning for ages 7 - 11. In association with British Science Week, St Catherine’s Primary School & Kindergarten, Conscious Cinema and Ecotainment!
Unfortunately there is no lift or wheelchair access. The event is held on the first floor and accessible by stairs and stair-lift.
