Description

Institute on Aging is proud to announce the return of THE SAN FRANCISCO LGBT DEMENTIA CARE PROJECT: Increasing Access to Dementia Capable Care for the LGBT Community. IOA was pleased to host this thorough training during the Summer of 2017, and looks forward to offering it again. The Alzheimer's Association, in partnership with Openhouse and Family Caregiver Alliance, collaborated on this 3-hour training which explores the dementia-care needs of LGBT older adults. The location of the training will be Institute on Aging, 3575 Geary Blvd, San Francisco, CA. Continuing Education Units will be provided by the Alzheimer's Association and Institute on Aging, and both organizations are accredited providers.

This introductory-to-intermediate-level course is designed to increase access to dementia-capable care for the LGBT community. Training topics include: LGBT cultural humility; understanding dementia; LGBT caregiver concerns; compassionate communication; and best and better practices. Some basic knowledge of the specific content area is required, but you need not have in-depth knowledge or skills. The activity will provide information at a level which includes basic-to-intermediate knowledge of the topic.

At the conclusion of the 3-hour workshop, participants will be able to:
a. Identify at least seven best practices for LGBT dementia care.
b. Update intake and assessment forms to include questions about sexual orientation and gender identity.
c. Discuss issues that affect older LGBT adults living with dementia and their care partners.
d. Educate others in their organization about sexual orientation and gender identity.
e. Educate others in their organization about Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias and dementia care.
f. Discuss dementia symptoms with a client and their care partner(s).
g. Identify LGBTQ dementia resources.

If you previously took this training at IOA during June, 2017, please note that this current curriculum is the same as last year's. We are hoping that those who were unable to take the training at that time will register for this 2018 class.
