Institute on Aging is proud to present THE SAN FRANCISCO LGBT DEMENTIA CARE PROJECT: Increasing Access to Dementia Capable Care for the LGBT Community. The Alzheimer's Association, in partnership with Openhouse and Family Caregiver Alliance, is offering this free 3-Hour training, with CEs, to aging-service providers on the dementia care needs of LGBT seniors. The location of the training will be Institute on Aging, 3575 Geary Blvd, San Francisco, CA.

This introductory-to-intermediate-level course is designed to increase access to dementia-capable care for the LGBT community. Training topics include: LGBT cultural humility, understanding dementia, LGBT caregiver concerns, compassionate communication, and best and better practices. Some basic knowledge of the specific content area is required, but you need not have in-depth knowledge or skills. The activity will provide information at a level which includes basic-to-intermediate knowledge of the topic.

At the conclusion of the 3-hour workshop, participants will be able to:
a. Identify at least seven best practices for LGBT dementia care.
b. Update intake and assessment forms to include questions about sexual orientation and gender identity.
c. Discuss issues that affect older LGBT adults living with dementia and their care partners.
d. Educate others in their organization about sexual orientation and gender identity.
e. Educate others in their organization about Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias and dementia care.
f. Discuss dementia symptoms with a client and their care partner(s).
g. Identify LGBT dementia resources.

Instructor: Rochelle Towers, MSW, has been a lifelong activist in issues relating to the environment, human rights, racism and poverty. She is a graduate of The Coaches Institute where she obtained her coaching certification and attended the Core Strengths Coaching Program at San Francisco State University. Rochelle holds a BA in Interdisciplinary Social Science and Masters in Social Work from San Francisco State University. She lives in Oakland, CA with her partner of over 20 years.

This program is funded by the San Francisco County Department of Aging and Adult Services, and provides services regardless of race, ancestry, national origin, creed, gender, gender identity, religion, sexual orientation, disability, income, or age.

Date: Tuesday, June 20th, 2017, 12:30 p.m. - 3:30 p.m. Doors to the training will open at noon. The program will begin on time, so please be prompt.

Place: Institute on Aging, 3575 Geary Blvd., San Francisco, CA 94118

Directions and Parking: Limited street parking around the building, in mostly 2-hour increments. Public transportation is nearby, with the Geary bus running right in front of the building.

Attendees are welcome to bring lunch, snack and beverages into the training, but none will be provided by IOA.

Cost: No charge, but RESERVATIONS ARE REQUIRED.

Both the Alzheimer's Association and Institute on Aging will be providing Continuing Education, and both are accredited providers. The following types of CEs will be offered: APA, BRN, CAMFT, CDHS, MCLE, NHAP, RCFE. Also note that BBS no longer delivers CEs. CAMFT does offer CEs to LCSWs.

From the Alzheimer's Association: This course meets the qualifications for CE units/ hours for the following certified license entities: Certified Nurse Assistant (CNA) and Home Health Assistant (HHA). Application pending approval by the California Department of Health Services (Provider #06329). Registered Nurse (RN) and Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN). Approved by the California Board of Registered Nursing (Provider #CEP12415). Licensed Marriage Family Therapists (LMFT) and Licensed Clinical Social Workers (LCSW). Approved by the California Association of Marriage and Family Therapists (Provider #63035). Nursing Home Administrator Program (NHAP). Application pending approval by the California Department of Public Health (Provider #CEP1546). Residential Care Facility for the Elderly Administrator (RCFE). Application pending approval by the California Department of Social Services (Provider #2000072- 740-2).

From Institute on Aging: American Psychological Association (APA): Institute on Aging is approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education for psychologists. Institute on Aging maintains responsibility for this program and its content. State Bar of California (MCLE) : Course meets the qualifications for 3.0 hours of continuing education credit for Attorneys (Provider #13264).
