About this event
Join us in an opportunity to spend a hands-on day in the kitchen with indigenous elders, learning, canning, chopping, and chatting. Roll up your sleeves, because at the end of this, you will have salmon on your hands, on your shirt, and hopefully canned in neat stacks of jars that will help feed our community. Together we will learn to pressure can proteins safely, the differences between varieties of salmon, and spiritual and salmon traditions of the local land, waters and people.
This day is about story-telling, connecting to the local and sacred traditions of calling the salmon home, and giving gratitude. It's about reconciliation - gently building relationships, bridges and mutual respect, growing to a place where we not only *see* each other, but truly honour what each is bringing to the table. In this case, quite literally the kitchen table.
Lunch provided (salmon of course). Please wear short-sleeve shirt, hair pulled back, bring an apron with a bib and a personal hand towel.
Led by Kwa'tle'maht, Holly Ann Higgins and Xwu'p'a'lich, Barb Higgins.

This Work & Learn day is one part of The Salmon Project, which includes:
(1) Teaching & learning safe preservation & pressure canning of proteins; (2) stocking our Tool Library with vacuum sealers, pressure canners and equipment to safely preserve salmon and other foods; (3) providing a protein option for subsidized food initiatives all year long; and (4) building relationships and connections between neighbours, ages, and cultures.
This project is made possible by the support of hundreds of people in our community who are members of and give to the cooperative of the Sunshine Coast Credit Union, which supports this and many other important projects in our communities. Also supported by Roberts Creek Community Association, with the donation of their amazing new commercial kitchen!
