About this Event

In April 2019, Newcastle City Council declared a ‘climate emergency’ and committed to making Newcastle carbon neutral by 2030. This is an ambitious programme that requires an integrated, city-wide approach. Joining them on this journey is Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals Foundation Trust, who have become the first NHS Trust in the UK to declare a ‘climate emergency’, and Newcastle University, both committing to reach a carbon neutral status by 2040.

According to the UK Green Building Council, the built environment contributes around 40% of the UK’s total carbon footprint. Set against this backdrop, this event will consider how the built environment can help cities reach their goals. It will bring together property and building experts, commercial firms and the public sector to ask what the route to carbon zero looks like. Discussions will look beyond Newcastle and consider the approaches being taken in other global cities, including Manchester and Copenhagen.
