Description

Synopsis

This seminar draws upon my doctoral study, which investigates the extent to which health care professional support (HCPs) and social support act as determinants of self-care among adults diagnosed with T2DM in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. This study explores the role of HCPs, family and social support in promoting diabetes self-care-management. In addition, the study explores the effect of age, gender, education, and income impact on diabetes self-care management. The findings of the mixed-methods investigation reveal stigma, culture and religion to be obstacles to diabetes self-care activities.

This seminar will explore the influence of social environment and gender, such as the cultural challenges to optimum diabetes management that women face, including exercising in public areas. Saudi women are forbidden from partaking in physical activities in public due to the segregation of males and females. These cultural challenges prevent patients from effectively managing their diabetes. This seminar will consider the relationship between the cultural and social environment and fears of stigmatisation that impact upon diabetes self-care activities and psychological esteem among people with T2DM in Saudi Arabia.
