The Road Traveled - A conversation with Beverly Malone, PhD, RN, FAAN and CEO of the National League for Nursing
Since 2007, Dr. Beverly Malone has served as CEO of the National League for Nursing, the premier organization for nurse faculty and leaders in nursing education offering faculty development, networking opportunities, testing and assessment, nursing research grants, and public policy initiatives to 20,000 individual and 1,100 institutional members. She has been a forceful advocate for universal access to quality health care delivery and has made increasing gender, cultural, and ethnic diversity in nursing and nursing education a signature issue.
Dr. Malone's career has mixed policy, education, administration and clinical practice. She has worked as a surgical staff nurse, clinical nurse specialist, director of nursing, assistant administrator of nursing, and nursing school dean. She was elected for two terms as president of the American Nurses Association representing 180,000 nurses in the USA and later became Deputy Assistant Secretary for Health within the US Department of Health and Human Services, the highest position so far held by any nurse in the US government. Dr. Malone served as general secretary of the Royal College of Nursing, the United Kingdom's largest professional union of nurses with more than 390,000 members, from June 2001 to January 2007. Dr. Malone has participated in numerous legislative activities and received many Honoary Degrees and awards. She has published various writings, and is on the Editorial Board of publications including the Journal of Black Psychology and the Journal of Professional Nursing, as well as others.
