The River as Song: A Music Dialogue Between Songwriters from the USA and China.

The River as Song: A Music Dialogue Between Songwriters from the USA and China is a concert featuring two renowned singer-songwriters: two-time Grammy winner Jim Lauderdale and Su Yang, a multiple national music award winner from China.

Lauderdale’s music spans Bluegrass, Country, Rock, Blues, Soul, and Folk. Jim’s music is descried as a collision of “McCartney-esque melodies, Dylan-esque lyrics, bluegrass, and twangy psychedelia.” As a songwriter he has songs recorded by George Strait, George Jones, Solomon Burke, Patty Loveless, Elvis Costello, Vince Gill, The Dixie Chicks, and many others.

Rooted in the tradition from the upstream of the Yellow River in Northwest China, Su Yang’s music exploits Chinese folk tunes and western rock style with passion, nostalgia, yearning, and sorrow. His album Virtue (2006) has reached over 8 million online stream, and sold and downloaded nearly two hundred thousand copies. This is Su Yang’s first appearance in Nashville.

In this concert, the two singer-songwriters share their life experiences as individuals, and together their music explores empathy, love, and humility. They will demonstrate how folk cultures function as cradles of modern songwriting in very different parts of the world and sing songs illustrating how folk culture influences into their original music.
