The Ballets Russes Arts Initiative is a presenting partner in this special performance by the Rimsky-Korsakov String Quartet in the recently restored St. Anna’s Chapel at St. Paul's Church. The quartet, founded in 1939, is a monument to Russian musical history. Based in Saint Petersburg, Russia, this is the Quartet's only public concert in the Greater Boston area on their March 2015 visit to the US.
The program will feature Karl Maria von Weber's Clarinet Quintet, Op. 34; Igor Stravinsky's Three Pieces for String Quartet ; Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky's String Quartet No.3, Op 30. Special guest clarinetist Stephen Bates will perform with the Quartet in the von Weber quintet.
The present members – Mikhail Bondarev (violin), Ekaterina Belisova (violin), Alexei Popov (viola) and Anton Andreev (cello) – are all graduates of the Saint Petersburg Conservatory. Steeped in the grand tradition of Russian music, they perform a diverse repertoire of masterworks, Russian classics and contemporary masters. The Quartet is also active in premiering young new composers as well as reviving the works of less well-known historical figures of the Saint Petersburg musical scene.
Since 1989, the group has been actively touring in Europe, and more recently in the US, and has made appearances at numerous prestigious music festivals. Join us in this unique opportunity to hear one of the master quartets of Europe in the beautiful and intimate space of St. Anna’s Chapel. A reception in the church hall will follow the concert.
