The Right to Rest” is a feature-length documentary that explores tiny homes as an innovative solution for Denver’s rising homeless population and affordable housing crisis. The documentary highlights policies that are enacted, which criminalize homelessness and push those experiencing homelessness out of historically marginalized neighborhoods. With the enactment of the Urban Camping Ban in 2012, this law made it illegal for individuals to sleep or shelter oneself in any unauthorized camping area like sidewalks, alleys and public parks. As authorities tell those who are experiencing homelessness to move along, people respond with “move along to where?”

In the spirit of restoring dignity, a renewed sense of purpose, and a sense of community, several organizations joined forces to build the Beloved Community Village - Denver’s first tiny home village. The tiny homes provide an innovative housing solution at a fraction of the cost of traditional affordable housing methods. This self-governing community empowers residents to build their homes and their community beginning with driving nails into the frames of their own homes.

The Right to Rest” sheds light on the issues surrounding homelessness - from the criminalization of homelessness to the affordable housing crisis to the stigma surrounding the homeless population. The narrative unfolds with the construction of the tiny home village, the sharing of personal stories from village residents as they re-build their lives within a supportive community, and the fight to pass the Colorado Right to Rest Act, which protects the basic rights for people experiencing homelessness by removing the Urban Camping Ban. At its heart, “The Right to Rest” explores what it means to make Denver “a world class city” and for whom.
