Event description

Description

The Refinery is an intensive two-day programme for professionals engaged in the art and craft of working with groups and teams.

The Refinery offers an opportunity to bring a renewed focus and refinement to your work with groups; to challenge habits, identify areas for fine tuning, and learn alongside fellow experienced trainers, teachers, facilitators, group coaches/therapists, moderators, and mediators.

“A very immersive and challenging group experience that was responsive to what everyone wanted and stretched me in all the right ways.” Participant, The Refinery.

The Refinery was originally designed and led by Rivca Rubin in response to the quest for ‘cultivating and enhancing the greatest asset you have – you’ (Stephen Covey 7th habit) and the reality that much of the training provision on offer focuses on additional skills rather than refining and advancing existing practice.

Rivca is a Behavioural Scientist (MSc) and master practitioner in Non Violent Communication and Neuro Linguistic Programming. She is the Director of Imag?ne, which facilitates personal and professional development through training, mediation, facilitation and coaching across the cultural, educational, health, private and voluntary sectors worldwide. She is also heading UPtimism, a global appeal to revolutionise thinking through a shift in everyday use of language.

This new iteration of The Refinery in Brighton is a collaboration with colleague Emma Haughton. Emma is a coach, facilitator and trainer to individuals, groups and teams across the creative and third sectors. She is a Relational Dynamics1st trainer, a certified Gestalt group work practitioner and is qualified to work with the Thinking Environment (Nancy Kline).

What Can I Expect?

Rigorous refining of your working practice. Expect to challenge habits, discover strengths and experiment with creative alternatives. Expect to ‘let go, to let come', to learn afresh.

“A great two days out of the everyday, to focus on skills and aptitudes that I want to reinforce and bring to the fore.” Participant, The Refinery.

Where?

The venue is a (currently!) little known treasure in Brighton, with stunning light and space to inspire and hold our learning.

We’ll aim to make the most of the beautiful seaside location by also working outside, weather permitting, and to come together to continue the learning, over supper at the end of the first day.

How Does It Work?

Before: Before arriving in Brighton we’ll invite you to engage with some prompts and questions to focus and prepare your thinking.

During: You will be invited to bring your questions, challenges, case studies, areas of your practice you’re keen to stretch and grow. Emma and Rivca will curate and support a responsive and rigorous peer group process including testing tools and approaches to resolutions of issues and challenges, experimenting with and practising new and different techniques, methodologies and communication styles. The programme is designed to stretch you and your practice, and invite you to engage in that stretching: experientially, theoretically, somatically and cognitively.

After: You will become part of The Refinery alumni, offering a formal and informal resource for continued learning, tips and support, accountability and fresh thinking.

What else?

This workshop will be enriched by a diverse group of professionals in the room: a live case study! So, please do pass this onto colleagues or those in your network whom you think would benefit OR who you would love to learn from and alongside. Our optimum (and maximum) number of participants is 12 and the course will not run with fewer than 6.

In order for you to get the most from this experience, we will ask you to bring live questions and experiences. It is therefore important that you are actively working with groups and teams. The focus is on developing and refining who you are and how you are in your work; it is not simply about adding new tools (though of course this may happen too).
