Join us for a conversation about CBD. Featured speakers Dr. Cecilia Hillard, Director, Neuroscience Research Center at the Medical College of Wisconsin; and Angela Prouty, an oil expert; will introduce cannabis as a plant and distinguish the differences between THC and CBD. The discussion will include: information on how CBD interacts with body, what is known about the therapeutic effects of CBD and potential negatives of CBD use.

As the push to legalize medical marijuana in Wisconsin continues, cannabidiol (CBD), the second most prevalent active ingredient in cannabis, has received a lot of attention over the past year. Epidiolex, used to treat rare, severe forms of epilepsy, was the first and only FDA approved drug derived from marijuana. With the passage of the 2018 Farm Bill, CBD oil is being sold in gas stations, health food stores, pet stores and CBD stores, claiming to treat ailments such as anxiety, insomnia and chronic pain. However, CBD oil is unregulated resulting in products that can vary in quality and purity. Research on CBD is in the very early stages and little is known about the true benefits, if any.

The event will include a presentation over the lunch hour for professionals from 11:30-1:00 pm and an evening presentation for the general public from 6:30-8:00 pm. Registration is free but required.

*Lunch will be provided thanks to the generous sponsorship of Rogers Behavioral Health. The lunch program will be limited to 150 participants.*

This presentation is the first of a series of marijuana education events; Marijuana: The Impact on the Brain slated for January 16, 2020, Marijuana: Depression, Anxiety and Mental Health slated for March 5th, 2020 and Marijuana: Addiction and Treatment slated for May 6th, 2020. About Dr. Cecilia Hillard
Cecilia J Hillard, PhD is Professor of Pharmacology and Toxicology, Director of the Neuroscience Research Center and Associate Dean for Research at the Medical College of Wisconsin. Dr. Hillard received a B.S. in Chemistry with High Distinction from the University of Virginia and a PhD in Neuropharmacology from the Medical College of Wisconsin. Her laboratory has long-standing interests in the pharmacology of the cannabinoids and biochemistry of endocannabinoid signaling. Her laboratory contributed some of the early evidence for catabolism and cellular accumulation of the endocannabinoids. Her laboratory has explored the roles of endocannabinoid signaling in many aspects of brain function, including emotional regulation, addiction, and neuroinflammation. She and her colleagues have reported seminal findings regarding the role of the endocannabinoids in multiple preclinical models, including multiple sclerosis, depression and anxiety. Recently, she is collaborating with others to explore changes in circulating endocannabinoids in humans, with the goal of using this as a translational measure of endocannabinoid tone. Her work has been funded continuously by NIH since 1987, and she has published more than 200 peer-reviewed, original papers. Dr. Hillard received the 2011 Mechoulam award for outstanding research in the area of cannabinoids and endocannabinoids and the 2017 Lifetime Achievement award, both from the International Cannabinoid Research Society.
