Event description

Description

Heart of Hastings - Community Land Trust is proud to host Costal Productions as they bring their outstanding performance of Robert Tressell's masterpiece, 'The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists' to Hastings, or should we say 'Mugsborough'! Costal Productions is based in Liverpool which shares our proud history, and love of Robert Tressell and this is a great way of uniting his two places of residence.

There has never been a more fitting time to either be reminded of or introduced to this witty and poignant tale of the politics of poverty and deprivation - if you're not familiar with the story it covers the skullduggery of old-school politicans from the Hastings Corporation, an unfair monetary system, workers' exploitation, and the threat of foreign competition, this was the real struggle of the people of Hastings in the early 1900's. Whether you've read the book a thousand times, have it on the shelf but haven't had the time to read it, or have never heard of it, this show will offer something for everyone with its take on Tressell's famous work.

All proceeds from both performances are going to Heart Of Hastings which is striving to change things in the most deprived areas of Hastings and your money will go directly into funding Tressell based activities and events here.

There will be a 30 minute welcome at the start of each performance where you can get a drink, listen to music, view the slide-show of local photos relevant to Tressell's work, and there will be merchandise available to buy.

“Every man who is not helping to bring about a better state of affairs for the future is helping to perpetuate the present misery, and is therefore the enemy of his own children. There is no such thing as being neutral: we must either help or hinder.” Robert Tressell
