About this event

Our online Jazz Talk series continues with the return of John McCusker and “Mapping the Cradle of Jazz” a visual presentation of the landmarks of the pioneers of jazz including King Oliver, Jelly Roll Morton, Louis Armstrong and Kid Ory. Join us on Zoom Wednesday, November 17, at 7:00 p.m. (Eastern) for the live presentation. The talk will also be posted after the fact on our YouTube channel for future viewing.

John McCusker has documented the people and places that gave New Orleans one of its many nicknames – The Cradle of Jazz — throughout his career. He started offering the Cradle of Jazz tour in the 1990s, combining a jazz lover’s appreciation of the art and a journalist’s devotion to the facts. John continues to dig for insights that add to our understanding of the city’s early jazz scene, which developed along South Rampart Streets, Central City and other enclaves of New Orleans that he shares on the tour. Although he plans to return to offering this tour in person as the pandemic allows, this is a special chance to experience it from the comfort of your own home.

About the presenter: In addition to being an award-winning photojournalist, first at The Times-Picayune and then The New Orleans Advocate, John McCusker has written two books; “Creole Trombone: Kid Ory and the Early Years of Jazz” (2012) and “Jockomo: The Native Roots of Mardi Gras Indians,” with Shane Lief, (2019). Both were published by the University Press of Mississippi. McCusker’s love and dedication to the jazz history of the area also brought him to be the Managing Director of The 1811/Kid Ory Historic House.

Registration by 5:00 p.m. the day of the event is required by using the ticket link provided. A Zoom link to the program will be sent by e-mail two hours before the presentation. Please note the event is 7:00 p.m. Eastern. Please adjust for your time zone accordingly. This is a FREE event, but we do happily take donations toward our programs at www.prjc.org.
