Préalablement aux chantiers de restauration des bâtiments et du site, les archéologues bruxellois s’intéressent depuis une trentaine d’années au prieuré de Rouge-Cloître. Vous partirez à la découverte de son patrimoine médiéval à travers les nombreux vestiges encore bien présents sur le site. De la pose de la première pierre de l’église en 1381, à la reconstruction de son chœur entre 1511 et 1520, un complexe monumental, soutenu par la duchesse Jeanne de Brabant, verra le jour sur ce terrain logé en lisière de la forêt de Soignes. Récemment restaurée, la Maison du Prieur – ancienne aile orientale du cloître ayant probablement abrité le scriptorium que fréquenta le peintre Hugo van der Goes – constituer le point d’orgue de cette visite. Au sein de ses murs, les archéologues en profiterons pour vous expliquer ce qu’ils ont découvert grâce à l’étude de sa charpente médiévale et l’analyse dendrochronologique (technique de datation du bois qui utilise le rythme de croissance des cernes annuels des arbres).

Vóór de restauratie van de gebouwen en de site hadden Brusselse archeologen al zo'n dertig jaar belangstelling voor de Priorij van het Rood Klooster. U zal dan ook tijdens dit bezoek het middeleeuwse erfgoed ontdekken aan de hand van de vele overblijfselen die nog op het terrein aanwezig zijn. Vanaf het leggen van de eerste steen van de kerk in 1381 tot de heropbouw van het koor tussen 1511 en 1520 werd op deze plaats, aan de rand van het Zoniënwoud, een monumentaal complex gebouwd, gesteund door hertogin Jeanne van Brabant. Het onlangs gerestaureerde Priorijhuis - de voormalige oostelijke vleugel van het klooster waar zich waarschijnlijk het scriptorium van de schilder Hugo van der Goes bevond - is het hoogtepunt van dit bezoek. Binnen haar muren zullen de archeologen u uitleggen wat ze hebben ontdekt dankzij de bestudering van het middeleeuwse dakspant en de dendrochronologische analyse (een houtdateringstechniek die gebruik maakt van de groeisnelheid van de jaarringen van bomen).

Prior to the restoration of the buildings and the site, Brussels archaeologists have been interested in the Priory of Rouge-Cloître for some thirty years. You will discover its medieval heritage through the many remains still present on the site. From the laying of the first stone of the church in 1381, to the reconstruction of its choir between 1511 and 1520, a monumental complex, endorsed by the Duchess Jeanne de Brabant, was built on this site on the edge of the Sonian forest. The recently restored Prior's House - the former eastern wing of the cloister that probably housed the scriptorium frequented by the painter Hugo van der Goes - is the highlight of this visit. Within its walls, the archaeologists will explain their discoveries based on the study of the medieval roof and dendrochronological analysis (a wood-dating technique that uses the growth rate of the annual rings of trees).
