Description

"People do things for people; not for things."
- John Herdman, Head Coach, Canadian Women's Soccer Team

Both the Gallup Organization and Google’s re:Work project have identified that a strong relationship rooted in psychological safety is a primary predictor of team engagement and performance. Great coaches in sport and in business help people move beyond what they believe they can do, and handle more pressure than they think they can, because of the psychological safety a powerful relationship creates. And, relationships are particularly aligned to core motivators of a millennial workforce.

The discipline of building this kind of relationship, however, is not well understood. When we think of building relationships we often think of networking or grabbing coffee. While that can be helpful, on its own it is unlikely to lead to the kinds of powerful relationships that we see in the best coach/coachee partnerships.

Based on their forth-coming white-paper Building Powerful Relationships: The Number One Driver of Employee Engagement and Resilience, Performance Coaching’s Sandra Stark and Garry Watanabe will be joined by Peter Jensen to break down the discipline of building powerful relationships and outline how we can think about building relationship-oriented skills into our leadership models.
