Event description
How we can meet our energy needs while preserving our forests and farmland

About this event

Connecticut has set an ambitious target of achieving a zero-carbon electric grid by 2040. Meeting Connecticut’s clean energy needs will require a range of renewable sources, with solar playing a significant role.

As expected, the search for sites for solar projects has led to conflicts between the interests of clean energy and the preservation of prime agricultural land and forests; these conflicts will invariably become more acute in the future. One way to avoid or minimize these inevitable conflicts is to site solar arrays on land that has already been “degraded,” including notably parking lots.

PACE has been studying the potential for solar canopies over parking lots in Connecticut.

Speakers include:

• Kieren Rudge, Operations Manager at PACE, will present the results of groundbreaking research by People's Action for Clean Energy (PACE).

• Tim White of the CT Energy Network and the Cheshire CT Board of Education will share experiences in having a solar canopy built at the police station in town.

• Stephan Hartmann and Eric Virkler of Earthlight Technologies will provide insights based on their extensive experience building solar canopies across the state.

This event will close with an invitation for towns to take part in the PACE Solar Canopies Project, exploring the potential of this resource in your town and seeking to get them built.
