Fri, April 7, 2017, 10:00 AM – 6:00 PM EDT
Opening reception and gallery talk March 28th 7pm - 9pm
The Portraits of Marcel Sternberger: Icons of the 20th Century features twenty portraits by the once-renowned photographer Marcel Sternberger as well as ephemera from the artist's estate. Active from the 1930’s to the 1950’s, Sternberger photographed giants of his generation including Albert Einstein, Sigmund Freud, George Bernard Shaw, Diego Rivera, Frida Kahlo, and others. Many of Sternberger’s portraits have remained iconic images, part of the photographic consciousness and reproduced across the world. One of Sternberger’s portraits of President Franklin Delano Roosevelt was the basis for the face of the American dime which most of us have used all of our lives. The photographs are drawn from both the Marcel Sternberger Archive owned by the 19th Century Shop and Jacob Loewentheil’s The Psychological Portrait: Marcel Sternberger’s Revelations in Photography, published by Skira/Rizzoli in 2016.
