Event description

Description

Sebastian Balfour, Emeritus Professor of Contemporary Spanish Studies at the London School of Economics and Political Science, will talk about the most serious political crisis since the restoration of democracy in Spain in 1977 after Franco’s dictatorship.

He will put the movement for Catalan independence in a wider context: the rise of populist nationalisms; the crisis of party systems in Europe and elsewhere; and the intensification of socio-economic grievances that has been channelled into nationalist causes against globalisation and neo-liberalism. Although the contexts and issues are different, there are parallels in the dynamics of Catalan independence with those of Brexit and the popular vote for Trump.
