Description

The Philosophy of Massive Small by Andrew Campbell

This is a talk for for anyone interested in how cities work. Learn how we can harness smallness in our interventions to achieve deep systemic change in the built environment.

As urban practitioners we often believe that we can design perfect solutions to urban problems - but the complex nature of urban issues means that we are frequently defeated in the long run, as things do not go to plan!

Massive Small Philosophy

About Massive Small

Massive Small is a methodology that values the inherent creativity of people to solve urban issues, and looks to establish ways for top-down systems, and urban practitioners’ interventions to unlock this energy, almost in the manner of acupuncture.

This talk will focus on the underlying philosophy of why such a method is so much more effective, and will highlight instances of its success, and ability to actually achieve long term systemic change in situations where the standard methods have proven to fail time and again.

Presenter Bio: Andrew Campbell, Executive Director, Massive Small

I am privileged to lead the Massive Small inception team, a group of uniquely talented individuals with a shared vision of how we can revitalise cities. Together we aim to put in place the conditions for Massive Small to become a massively transformative force in the world.

I began to collaborate with my father, Kelvin Campbell, at the same time as encountering complexity theory, and discovering its importance in understanding how cities develop. For the past five years, we have been honing the method and produced several publications.
