Event description

Description

Don't miss the WORLD PREMIERE of Nolan Williams, Jr.'s Hold Fast To Dreams, a song cycle for choir and orchestra commissioned by the Mann Center for the Performing Arts in honor of Colonel Guion Bluford, Jr., first African American in space. The 20-minute work will be featured in The Philadelphia Orchestra concert, "A Space Odyssey", a program that will feature space-themed and space-inspired music--from John Williams' Adventures on Earth (from the motion picture, E.T.) to Richard Strauss' Also sprach Zarathustra (theme from the motion picture, A Space Odyssey). Hold Fast To Dreams will be performed by the world-class Philadelphia Orchestra, under the baton of Maestro Cristian Măcelaru, Soprano Leah Hawkins (Cafritz-Domingo Young Artist with the Washington National Opera), Bass-baritone Frank Mitchell (Philadelphia-based artist who has performed nationally and internationally with premiere opera companies and orchestras), Narrator Derrick Pitts (Chief Astronomer of The Franklin Institute), and the Mann Center Festival Choir (featuring community voices from Intermezzo, The Mendelssohn Society of Philadelphia, Sounds of Joy, and the Chancel Choir of the African Episcopal Church of St. Thomas; Jay Fluellen, choir master; Sheila Booker, choir administrator).
