June is Arts Month at New Haven Free Public Library. On Saturday, June 22, from 1-3 pm, professional artist Gregory Maichack (GregoryMaichack.com) will offer a workshop, “The Pastel Art of Georgia O’Keeffe,” at the Ives Main Library, 133 Elm St.
Maichack will explore the style of America’s foremost modernist pastel painter of flowers, touching also on her landscapes and shells. Participants will work in tandem with the instructor, focusing on a calla lily image. Students will work with professional grade pastels, pastel pencils, Rembrandt pastels, and assorted Canson pastel paper.
Participants will experiment with a variety of pastel handling techniques, including scumbling, feathering, blending, slurring, edges, and layering. Learn to layer without fixatives to achieve O’Keeffe’s “clean” look; learn also how to build an abstract foundation by studying Leonardo da Vinci’s revolutionary drawing technique.
Space is limited to 20 students and is designed to accommodate beginner through intermediate skill levels. Register by June 12 online at pastelworkshop.eventbrite.com. A $30 registration fee includes all materials. For more information, please call the library at 203-946-8835.
