Event description
The Pan Afrikan Peoples Arkestra & Angel The Oracle, feat. the great voice of Ugmaa

About this Event

The Pan Afrikan Peoples Arkestra was founded in 1961 by the late Horace Tapscott, an incredible pianist and composer/arranger with a vision of a true community ensemble. From then to today, this Arkestra carries a mission to promote black love, black wealth and black history through black music. The Ark consists of musicians, dancers, poets, lyricists and it’s own vocal choir, The Great Voice of UGMAA (Union of God’s Artists Ascension). On August 11th the Ark and The Great Voice of UGMAA will perform at Zebulon following the release of “Why Don’t You Listen?” on Dark Tree Records. This release is a live recording of an incredible Ark & Voice of UGMAA performance at LACMA in 1998, which is significant for several reasons, one being that it was the last time Horace played piano with the Ark (Link below). The stellar vocalist Dwight Trible lead the choir on that very date and will be leading the voices again at Zebulon !

Angel Bat Dawid descended on Chicago's Jazz & improvised music scene just a few years ago. In a very short time, the potency, prowess, spirit & charisma of her cosmic musical proselytizing has taken her from relatively unknown improviser to borderline ubiquitous performer in Chicago's avant-garde. She composed and premiered her opera "Song of Solomon: A Cosmic Space Opera" at Co-Prosperity Sphere in 2018. Angel also curates a series of nine multidisciplinary concerts at Elastic Arts called "Mothership9" where she is building a sonic mythological spaceship to the cosmos. On any given night you can find Angel adding aura to ensembles led by Ben LaMar Gay, or Damon Locks, or Jaimie Branch, or Matthew Lux, or even, on a Summer night in 2018, onstage doing a woodwind duo with Roscoe Mitchell. This year 2019, Angel makes her recording debut on Chicago record label International Anthem. Her Album “The Oracle” was created entirely alone – performing, overdubbing & mixing all instruments & voices by her self – recorded using only her cell phone in various locations, from London UK to Cape Town RSA, but primarily from her residency in the attic of the historic Radcliffe Hunter mansion in Bronzeville, Southside, Chicago. Keep an eye out for the Oracle on Vinyl this summer, and a fall tour with her 7 piece band Tha Brothahood!

Mark Maxwell and Jesse Justice will be DJing
