The ORDER of the LITERARY ONION
A friendly club for literary lovers at The Onion Garden. Meeting each month to discuss a book of our choice. We’re open to all comers and foster a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere.
This month we are discussing The River Is Waiting by Wally Lamb. Almost all the book is staged in prison and explores the worst and best of humanity. It isn't an easy book to read in places, but reflects the reality of prisons as Wally spent some time teaching writing workships to female prisoners. This is his first novel in nine years and a new chance to explore human imperfection as he did earlier in “She’s Come Undone,” about an obese adolescent girl awash in depression, and “I Know This Much Is True,” the story of a man fighting to protect his paranoid schizophrenic twin brother. The River is Waiting has been chosen by Oprah Winfrey for her book club.

The Magic of The Onion Garden
One of the things that makes The Onion Garden so special is its ability to bring people together. It’s a place where art and nature converge, creating an environment that inspires creativity and fosters connection. The garden’s vibrant energy is contagious, and it’s impossible to visit without feeling inspired.
For artists, The Onion Garden offers a unique opportunity to showcase their work in a setting that enhances its beauty. The natural light, the lush greenery, and the sense of community all contribute to an experience that is both intimate and impactful.
Accessibility
The Onion Garden emerged from a bare piece of forgotten concrete pavement behind the towering offices along Victoria St. in Victoria, London. As such it has uneven surfaces and a small but steep set of stairs. We are, sadly, not suitable for wheelchair users, but we are working hard to change that.
