Description

The Orange County Register is pleased to announce The Orange County Register Photography Workshop. This workshop is an opportunity for photographers to work alongside some of our staff photojournalists to gain experience in using the best techniques and equipment to improve your photography skills. You will receive editing and coaching from Register photographers and will have an opportunity to do some shooting and present your work. Prizes will be awarded at the end of the workshop for the best work.

This two-day workshop will be held on Saturday, Feb. 16 and Sunday, Feb. 17, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. each day. The workshop will feature lectures from our photojournalists, group discussions and Q & A sessions. Attendees will receive assignments and a Register photo coach will edit your images. At the end of the workshop, awards will be presented for the work and some of the images will be published in The Register.

NOTE: This workshop is limited to 25 participants.

Kevin Sullivan - Finding the peak moment, 9:30 a.m. -10:30 a.m.

Kevin Sullivan has a gift for always capturing the most important moment in sports photography. He’s covered all the professional teams, including many years covering the Angels and Ducks. He’s covered several World Series, Stanley Cup Finals and the 2010 Winter Olympics. You’ll learn to capture those peak moments in your every day photography.

Break, 10:30 a.m. -11 a.m.

Mark Rightmire - Passion, style and personal vision, 11 a.m. - 12 p.m.

As a photojournalist for more than three decades at The Orange County Register, Mark approaches each assignment as a new visual challenge. He has covered everything from wildfires in southern California to the Olympics in Russia, surfing in Australia and compelling photographs of bugs and birds in the yard of his Orange County home. With a passion for the outdoors, nature and travel, Mark’s thoughtful composition and unique vision of the everyday world will help you see things in a whole new light.

Lunch, 12 p.m. - 2 p.m.

Leonard Ortiz - Creating impact with lighting, 2 p.m. – 3 p.m.

Throughout his career, Leonard has used creative lighting to give his images more impact. His philosophy is simple, “I only use available light….whatever light source is available to me I’ll use: sunlight, strobes, incandescent light, reflected light, and even flashlights.” In this session, Leonard will share his years of experience in lighting to help you create more drama in your photos.

Break, 3 p.m. - 3:30 p.m.

Photo Discussions - We will break into smaller groups for discussions 3:30 p.m. – 5 p.m.

Participants will break up into smaller groups for group discussions and question and answer sessions. Critiques and photo reviews will be offered. Bring samples of your work and think about what you’d like to improve upon as a photographer.

Sunday, February 17, 2019, 9 a.m.

The Assignment, 9 a.m. -12 p.m.

In the morning you will have an opportunity to take photographs and look for opportunities that speak to what you like to do as a photographer. We will not meet at the workshop however, we will be here if you have any questions before heading out. We will have coffee, pastries, and fruit available.

Lunch, 12 p.m. - 1 p.m.

The Edit, 1 p.m. - 3:30 p.m.

After spending the morning shooting, you’ll have the opportunity to be edited by your Orange County Register photo coach. You’ll have the chance to talk about your morning and the images you feel are your best.

Break, 3:30 p.m. - 4:00 p.m.

Presentations and Awards, 4:00 p.m. - 5 p.m.

Photographers and editors will discuss the work you did and present first, second and third place awards.


FAQs

What should I bring?

Bring your digital camera and lenses. You’ll have opportunities to ask questions about your gear and you will need your camera for an assignment. Please bring samples of your work you would like to have critiqued. These images can be on your laptop, iPad or on a flash drive that we can transfer to a computer.
