WELCOME

The Opus119 Middle & High School welcomes you to an informational Open House and tour. Meet the founders, learn about our proven, future focused, and engaging approach, and get answers to your questions about curriculum and enrollment. We are excited to have you and look forward to sharing our passion and enthusiasm for progressive education.

“When we proceed with passion, our students become fully engaged in their own education and we recover a sense of meaning, purpose, and joy in our lives.” - Paul Cummins

HISTORY

Our new OPUS119 Middle and High School stands upon solid foundations. The school is built on proven experience, the latest in education science, and a history of passion around thinking and learning.

Ethan Yi Dong, the founder of the OPUS119 school of music, came to America to study at Crossroads School. A superb pianist, he studied alongside Mary Ann Cummins and eventually learned about the power of progressive education from Paul Cummins, lead founder of Crossroads.

After attending Yale University, Ethan returned to California to open his after-school music school in Irvine, CA.

In September 2018, OPUS119 will expand to a full-day middle and high school, serving grades 6-9 to start and will add grades 10-12 in future years. This new progressive school is modeled after very successful schools co-created by Paul Cummins, Crossroads and TREE Academy, and the Sycamore School, co-founded by Tedd Wakeman.

Wakeman joins the team as an experienced educator and dynamic leader, becoming the school’s founding director. He and Cummins have worked together on various educational projects in the past. For these three passionate and enthusiastic voices in education, OPUS119 serves as an amazing opportunity to create a school for effective 21st Century learning.

“Education is a human experience. If we do not treat it as such, we miss an opportunity to instill compassion, integrity, and a true fire for growth in those we entrust with the future of humanity.” - Tedd Wakeman

MISSION

At OPUS119, we champion an innovative and individualized approach to education. We seek to develop self-directed, autonomous problem-solvers who are skilled in collaboration, critical thinking, and communication. Helping students to become college-ready is simply one facet of a thoughtful education. In addition to developing the kinds of skills that will allow them to effectively access the college experience, we must have the broader focus of preparing them for a meaningful life in a complex and evolving world. With these goals in mind, we consistently pursue a relevant, engaging, and challenging approach to thinking and learning, where shifting students from consumers to producers is an essential component of the educational experience.

VISION

The assumptions of an industrial-age-model of schooling are no longer sufficient for children to thrive in the 21st Century. Because information is ubiquitous and in constant flux, we have to move beyond teachers as mere transmitters of content. Our educators become curators of experiences; guides and coaches who help students explore, observe, and reflect. While we embrace the need to teach foundational solids, we must also help to develop the critical thinking skills necessary to be empathetic citizens, interested in noticing problems and designing solutions.

To that end, we merge the best classroom practices and proven methods with educational theory and developments in learning science. Metacognition, or “thinking about thinking,” helps students use their knowledge, skills, and abilities to embrace their curiosity in service of deeper learning. Students are both challenged and encouraged to explore, innovate, and create.

OPUS 119 is designed for high achievers or students feeling disillusioned, for those with burning passions, as well as those with diverse learning modalities. Our school is for all families in search of an experience that is rigorous while being student-centered, engaging, project-based, relevant, future-focused, and interdisciplinary.

WE HOPE TO SEE YOU THERE!!!
