Event description
You are invited to a night of food, drinks, and innovative healthcare initiatives. Together we can save lives. One ride at a time.

About this Event

The Okoa Project is a nonprofit dedicated to increasing access to healthcare. We build ambulances that are made to save lives. Beyond that, each ambulance creates local jobs, community empowerment, and stronger healthcare systems.

Tonight, we invite supporters and interested friends to learn more about our current initiatives and positive impact made over the summer. We will also be discussing the exciting next steps we are taking to bring ambulances to new countries in Africa - including the launch of 4 new ambulance services in partnership with The Olive Branch for Children. We will also be able to update our supporters on the beginning of our launch in Ghana. We cannot wait to share our vision to new and old supporters, and spread the word about saving lives, one ride at a time.

In many rural communities in Tanzania and around the world, medical facilities are too far or too difficult to reach. This prevents patients from receiving the care they need and contributes to high maternal mortality rates. Pregnant women choose to give birth at home rather than risk giving birth on the side of the road while painfully walking or riding on a motorcycle to a clinic.

We are a group of MIT engineers who are working in collaboration with Tanzanian innovation centers and community leaders, to achieve this goal. Over the past 3 years we have developed a motorcycle ambulance trailer that can transport a patient, medical supplies and one other person. Our locally made trailer is already making an impact, having taken over 90 people to the hospital since we launched our service in January.
