Event description
An ongoing series that brings to the foreground a more rigorous dialogue around contemporary creative practice in a changing London.

About this Event

The Object (17:15)

Speakers: Dal Chodha, Ruohong Wu, Ishan Khosla

Chair: Riya Patel

What is a designed object? In a world that’s increasingly concerned with reuse and sustainability, is the “old” the new “new”? If found objects, repurposed material and informal making becomes our primary mode of production, where does that leave the ideas of invention, scientific innovation and technological progress that underpinned the modernist tradition of design? And what role do curators, archivists and museums play in collecting and presenting objects and shaping the design canon of the future?

About Tiipoi Talks

Tiipoi is a London-based design studio and brand doing Indian Design. Tiipoi Talks are an on-going talks programme curated by Manijeh Verghese (Head of Public Programme at the Architectural Association, currently curator of the British Pavilion for Venice Architectural Biennale) and Spandana Gopal (Founder of Tiipoi). This year, Manijeh and Spandana have invited Debika Ray, founder of Clove magazine to co-curate the talks programme.

The talks aim to start new conversations and encourage a deeper and more critical way of asking questions around contemporary creative practice. By inviting a diverse set of practitioners, it hopes to situate these discussions within a more inclusive reading of history and the disciplinary canon we operate within. Through a cross-pollination of different forms of practice and backgrounds, the talks hope to bring to the foreground a more rigorous dialogue around making and sharing work in a changing London.

In continuation of the new series launched this year during London Craft Week, a pair of talks during London Design Festival will bring together designers, artists, architects and cultural commentators with a view to debate the power of objects, crafts-based practice and the role of context in shaping projects and ideas.

Tiipoi’s other talk during London Design Festival is called The Craft – Remaking Memories, and features speakers Sam Jacob, Ella Bulley, Shirley Bhatnager and Fernando Laposse with Debika Ray.
