Tutus and point shoes twirl and swirl as dancers of The Bay Shore Ballet Theatre grace the stage once again,

bringing theholiday season to life performing the world’s most beloved ballet, “The Nutcracker”.

Performances will be presented at the Fairhope Civic Center, 161 N. Section St., on Saturday,

Janet Carole, artistic director and former professional principal dancer with

leading U.S. ballet companies, has restaged this legendary classic formore than 70 dancers and

performers from all of the east bay communities. The production is danced to the brilliant score of

Peter Tchaikovsky in two full acts and features the professional set design of the late

William Lloyd. Written by E.T.A. Hoffman in 1816, the story of “The Nutcracker” evokes

the nostalgia of a Victorian Christmas and tells the story of a little girl named Clara.

The ballet is set in a European village long ago as Clara’s family is preparing for a Christmas party.

Clara’s mysterious Uncle Drosselmeyer arrives with his nephew and

brings gifts forall the children, along with wonderful life sized mechanical dolls to entertain the guests.

For Clara, he brings the very special gift of a Nutcracker.

As midnight approaches Clara tiptoes downstairs to find her Nutcracker, and as she falls

asleep by the firelight, she begins to have a strange dream. In Clara’s dream, she sees

her belovedNutcracker come to life to battle a straggly army of rats and the menacing King of the Rats.

The brave toy soldierscome to life to battle the Rats, but the Nutcracker is only saved when Clara throws

her shoe at the Rat King, killing him. Then, the Nutcracker is magically transformed into a handsome prince

and along with her UncleDrosselmeyer, they are swept away on a fantastic journey to themajestic

Kingdom of Snow. As snowflakes swirl around them in abeautiful waltz, the Nutcracker Prince dances for

Clara in an elegant pas de deux, partnering with the Queen of theSnow. As the story continues,

Clara and Uncle Drosselmeyer travel on to the Kingdom of Sweets to meet thebeautiful Sugar Plum Fairy.

She summons her court to bring flowers and sweets to Clara as they perform dancesfrom all around the world. As the ballet

closes, Clara remembers her beautiful dream as she safely

cradles hernutcracker in her arms.
